Truly, this will go on my list of favorite books. Writing letters should never go out of style. The beauty and the depth of the letters in this book brought tears to my eyes. These were men who were either truly in love or had within them emotions that could only be expressed by the written word. They were not throwing words on a page or murmuring a quick "I love you" They were laying bare their hearts.
I was touched. Would that I receive a letter one day with even a percentage of this dedication Truly, this will go on my list of favorite books. Would that I receive a letter one day with even a percentage of this dedication. I grew jealous of the women that received them. Beautiful book How adorable knowing the very personal, the purest of feelings do those 'Great Men' have and how beautifully they put it into words!!! View 2 comments. Saw this book appear on Sex and the City and it made me want to read it right then and there. What a classic read!

Some of the letters in here are laughable and sexist but many of them did make me gush and filled my heart, such sweet words! Jul 06, Laura Verret rated it liked it. I also found it highly ironic how often a man would profess himself completely enraptured by an illicit love, and when once married to the object of that love would quickly tire of it. I also find that this collection of letters weighs itself heavily in my estimation of the men included.
For shame, Beethoven, Liszt, and Byron! Hurrah for Washington, Cromwell, and Sir Walter! Hurrah for men who stayed true to their wives! Hurrah for men who felt deeply and retained their honor! Jun 22, Antoniya rated it it was amazing. I awake full of you. Your image and the intoxication of last night give my senses no rest.
Sweet, incomparable Josephine, what a strange effect you have on my heart. Are you angry? Do I see you sad? Are you worried? My soul breaks with grief, and there is no rest for your lover; but how much the more when I yield to this passion that rules me and drink a burning flame from your lips and your heart? This night has shown me that your portrait is not you! You leave at midday; in three hours I s I awake full of you.
You leave at midday; in three hours I shall see you. Meanwhile, my sweet love, a thousand kisses; but do not give me any, for they set my blood on fire. Some of these moved me to tears Sir Walter Raleigh. Many made me giggle. Most made my heart smile. And few made my brows furrow. It truly is a lost art and confession of faith - written word.
While some letters left me at peace, I found a sense of urgency and panic in most letters, desperation. What powerful insight to know that love brought even these powerful figures to their knees. Letters from Fitzgerald, Roosevelt, Wilson, and Beethoven were love inspired Ever thine. Ever mine. Ever ours Some of these moved me to tears Sir Walter Raleigh.
Ever ours. Nov 28, Keri Daskam rated it it was amazing Shelves: year The most interesting thing about this book was how impossible it was to tell the faithful from the scoundrel by his words. It should be required reading for every young lady. What a gift! Aug 03, Ahcarr rated it liked it.
I found some beautiful excerpts and a pair of complete letters I loved. Some of them were clearly just fillers. I really liked the explanation after each letter, very concise and clear. I love this book anyway, it was a lovely present. This book is perfect for all the romantics out there.

Love Letters of Great Men and Women, Book by Ursula Doyle (ed.) (Paperback) | laqanacyhyro.tk
Voyeuristically fascinating glimpses into the passions, longings and frustrations of some of history's most erudite, rational and driven individuals. Aug 11, Ipshita Sengupta rated it liked it Shelves: reads. Beauty one could get to know and fall in love with in one hour and cease to love it as speedily; but the soul one must learn to know. Believe me, nothing on earth is given without labour, even love, the most beautiful and natural of feelings. Most letters—not surprisingly— appear to be outburts of jealous lovers, living far from their love interest, worried sick if they're being cheated on.
It was not until Robert Browning and then Pierre Curie that the other—the person to whom the letters were being written—come to have an existance of their own. Flawed and average in their letters and often so in their real lives, the collection reflect briefly on interesting autobiographical details of each men. A snippet from Leo Tolstoy's life: "In , shortly after leaving the army and the loss of his brother to tuberculosis, Tolstoy courted and became engaged to the beautiful Valeria Arsenev. However—wanting her to understand him completely before marriage—he gave her his diaries; the shock ended their relationship.
Laura gave me this to me for my birthday because I write her love letters regularly. It wasn't until later that we realized this book only exists because a book of the same name is a plot point in the Sex in the City movie. Learning that really embarrassed Laura to the point she insisted we didn't have to read it because she IS a big fan of the show, but swore she didn't know about the connection before she gave it to me.
